That Touch the Republic
Pending and recently enacted legislation scored against the nine-stage CVA framework. Both parties. Federal and state. Scored on constitutional architecture impact, not whether the policy is right or wrong.
A weekly instrument for
measuring democratic health
The Civic Viability Assessment applies the nine-stage republican failure sequence documented by Thucydides in 431 BC, cross-referenced against the American constitutional architecture as designed in 1787, to observable, documented, publicly verifiable weekly data.
This is not partisan commentary. Both parties are assessed against the same constitutional framework. The founders’ design is the standard. Current conditions are measured against it honestly, with sources cited, confidence intervals documented, and the methodology transparent.
Each week, the Assessment scores where the republic sits on the failure sequence: what is advancing, what is stable, and what the historical record says about comparable conditions.
The instrument is built on a 120-year back-test against six generational snapshots. The back-test finds things the textbooks missed.

The Assessment back-tests its nine-stage scoring model against six generational snapshots from 1906 to 2026, using documented historical sources with explicit confidence intervals marking the precision of each estimate.
Four additional back-test findings, including the Cold War suppression hypothesis and the methodological transition analysis, available to Spartiate subscribers.

Was Exiled, and Saved the Republic
Homer. Sophocles. Plato. Aristotle. They all belong in the same room. This series introduces them one at a time, because you can’t read the founders without knowing the Greeks they were reading.
Act I, The Failure · 424 BC
Thucydides was an Athenian general commanding forces in Thrace in 424 BC when Sparta’s Brasidas moved on Amphipolis. Thucydides arrived too late. The city fell. Athens exiled him for twenty years.
Act II, The Gift · 424–404 BC
Exile became the condition that made his work possible. Freed from Athenian faction loyalty, he could travel both sides of the war. He never finished it. The manuscript breaks off mid-sentence in 411 BC. He likely died before Athens fell in 404, never knowing how the story ended.
Act III, The Redemption · 1787, This Week
James Madison read Thucydides before Philadelphia. He encoded the warnings directly into the architecture. The redemption is not 2,500 years old. It is this week. Every time the Assessment scores Stage 4, Vocabulary Capture, it is Thucydides being right again.

A Pattern Recognition Problem 2,500 Years in the Making
I took Greek and Latin in high school. Philosophy and Greek history in college. More than a few years ago, and I will be honest with you, most of the vocabulary is gone. The verb conjugations, the case endings, the ability to read Thucydides in the original. Fading at best, fleeting if not gone.
But something else stayed. Something that has nothing to do with language and everything to do with pattern. And for the past several years, watching American public life with the particular attention of someone who spent a career in materials science, where you learn very early that understanding how things fail is more important than understanding how they work when everything is fine, I have had a feeling I cannot shake.
I have been here before.
“The kind of events that occurred in the past will recur in similar or analogous forms.”
– Thucydides, 431 BC
Not personally. I am not that old. But the pattern I am watching, the specific sequence of institutional stress, vocabulary capture, faction warfare, and democratic exhaustion, is documented. It has been documented for 2,500 years.

The founders left the repair instructions in the primary sources. This instrument reads them weekly and measures how close we are to needing them urgently.
